Bollywood dance is a great way to keep fit while experiencing a new culture. The dance form and music combines the more traditional styles of Indian and Asian cultural dance with the modern feel of India. With the majority of dances coming from films each dance tells a story in a fun and modern style. The style of the dance and the traditional aspects I draw on really depend on the style of the music.
What is in Bollywood dance?
Khattack: a traditional religious based dance that focuses on technical foot beats and the dancer and drumming beat play together.
Bharatanatyam: A traditional Indian dance that also has religious foundations, focusing on complicated rhythms of hands and feet, telling stories through the beat of the music. People will train in this style for years and years, and it takes a great deal of inner body core strength and control.
Bhangra: This is a modern style Punjabi music with the traditional beat many people associate with Indian music. This dance style is much faster and lively compared to the traditional styles
Western influence: Bollywood dance now has many western influences, and it's this influence that gives Bollywood its modern twist. Modern twists on all of the above dance forms can be great fun. This western influence can be heard in the music, its and interesting fusion of tradition beats with the modern, it could include a section of Spanish or Latin rhythms to even the 60's
